On April 21, 1966, EthiopianEmperor Haile Selassie made a historic visit to Jamaica. His arrival was met with immense enthusiasm, as he was welcomed to the island by a crowd of more than 100,000 people. His visit marked a pivotal moment for the Rastafari movement, solidifying their belief in his divinity. This moment has shaped the Marley Family for decades.
Notably, during his visit to Jamaica, His Majesty gifted the country with a school — the Haile Selassie High School — underlining his deep belief in education as a pathway to freedom; and his conviction that knowledge is power:
“We must also help each other in our endeavors to expand education, to raise the standard of living of our respective peoples. To this end we wish to signify the appreciation of the sentiments held by the Jamaican people for the Ethiopian people and as a manifestation of our sincere friendship, within our very limited means, we have made an agreement with the Jamaican Government to establish a school for Jamaicans here.”
— Haile Selassie in his 1966 address to the Jamaican Parliament
As we approach the 60 year anniversary of this milestone moment, Ghetto Youths Foundation alongside the Bob and Rita Marley Foundation invite you to join us to honor both the legacy of His Majesty, and the future of our young people.
Over the years, the Marley Family has executed projects and engaged in programs at the school.
Now — this summer — we will embark on a major infrastructure intervention at Haile Selassie High School, including support for the following immediate needs:
Plumbing and running water for student bathrooms
Roof repair for more than 60% of the school
Window installation for 30% of the school
Wifi installation
Computers, Printers, Desks, and Chairs
Basic learning tools and supplies
With your partnership and support, we can transform the learning environment for hundreds of young people — and honor the legacy of leadership, wisdom, and the firm belief that education is the key to personal freedom.
